The red summer fruits strengthen the body’s defences, protect against cardiovascular diseases and reduce the risk of certain types of cancer. Their antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic effect has long been proven. That is why one must consume fresh tomatoes daily in the summer and possibly preserve them for the winter as well.

How to properly store tomatoes
If the tomatoes are not yet ripe, it is best to store them on the counter for a few days until ripe. You know they’re ripe when they’re fragrant and give off a little. Once ripe, either consume them or place them in the fridge to preserve their freshness. A ripe tomato will keep fresh in the fridge for about a week or two. If you leave them there for a long time, they will have a floury consistency and develop moldy spots. This is an instantaneous indication that the tomatoes have gone bad! In addition, tomatoes should not be stored next to other vegetables in the refrigerator. The red fruits emit ethylene, a ripening gas that can affect the ripening process of other fruits and vegetables.

Can we store tomatoes in the fridge?

If you put unripe tomatoes in the fridge, they’ll stay that way – never as flavorful as you would have them! For overripe tomatoes, make sure they are refrigerated to slow their spoilage. Remember, you can use mushy, overripe tomatoes in tomato sauces, chutneys, and ketchup. Yes, we can’t refuse to keep them in the fridge, but we’d rather advise: let your tomatoes sit at room temperature before eating them, no matter what. What is the right way to store cut tomatoes?
Because the skin protects the flesh of the tomatoes, it’s best to store the red fruit uncut. However, if you have a leftover sliced tomato, there is a way to keep it fresher longer. Simply cover the cut side with plastic wrap and loosely wrap the uncut side. Place the tomato, cut-side down, on a small plate and place in the fridge. Stored this way, sliced tomatoes will keep for a few days.
To store whole slices of tomatoes to put on a sandwich or burger, you need to place them in an airtight storage container or tightly sealed plastic bag. Then you can keep them in the fridge. Try to use the tomato slices within three days, while they’re still fresh.
It is better to use cut tomatoes or tomato slices immediately instead of keeping them in the fridge.
Storing tomatoes correctly: can you freeze them?
You can actually freeze tomatoes! The frozen fruit can only be used in winter cooking when you crave the sweetness of summer tomatoes. If you have a lot of ripe tomatoes and don’t use them all, rinse them, let them dry, remove the stems, and freeze them in a freezer-safe container or bag. As simple as that!
Once you’re ready to eat them, simply add the frozen tomatoes to a bowl of lukewarm water. After a few minutes in the water, the skins peel off easily. When it comes to frozen tomatoes, consider using them in cooked dishes like a tomato-based pasta sauce. Wait until summer for dishes like a Caprese salad or a tomato-topped sandwich. Everything tastes better when made with fresh tomatoes.
