childhood interests

Lena Johanna Gercke was born on February 29, 1988 to Elvira and Uwe Gercke in Marburg, Hesse. However, she grew up in the town of Cloppenburg, where she attended the Roman Catholic Gymnasium Liebfrauenschule Cloppenburg (ULF). In 2007 she did her Abitur, i.e. the secondary school leaving certificate. She has a sister named Yana Gercke, singer of the band “Oh, Alaska”, and two paternal half-siblings. The model revealed that as a child she “wanted to be something different every month” and had such diverse interests that she “never settled on one thing.” She grew up in a musical family, participated in dance competitions and played amateur chess. In fact, it was her dance teacher who saw her potential and encouraged her to take up modeling. Even as a teenager she was very tall and was nicknamed Raffi, short for giraffe.

She won Germany’s Next Top Model

Lena Gercke’s modeling career began after she won a casting call for Burger King on August 14, 2004, after which she appeared in a commercial for the fast food chain. In the early years she was represented by Langer-Pueschel and continued to take part in photo shoots, catwalk shows and dance events. In early 2006, she was selected as a contestant for the first season of the reality competition Germany’s Next Topmodel, hosted by well-known German model Heidi Klum. She won the competition and landed an endorsement deal with fashion label OuiSet, as well as a modeling deal with IMG Models in Paris. She also appeared on the cover of the June 2006 issue of German magazine Cosmopolitan and signed an endorsement deal with Microsoft for Windows Live. In the years that followed, she appeared on the covers of magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Sports Week and Glamor in America and Votre Beauté in France, and appeared in advertising campaigns for brands such as H&M, Mexx and Geox. Still, she once mentioned that her future as a catwalk model in Paris was slim because of her feminine, fit figure as opposed to the “almost boyish, thin body” that is usually favoured. Instead, she tried her luck in the United States, walking the runway at New York Fashion Week for Custo Barcelona’s spring season in 2010.

She became successful as a TV presenter

Lena Gercke, who has had many TV appearances since her GNTM win, was selected to host the Austrian reality TV series Austria’s Next Topmodel in 2009 and hosted the first four seasons until 2012. She hosted several episodes of Red! – Stars, Lifestyle & More from 2009 to 2013 and later also had guest appearances on the show. In 2013 she became one of the judges on the German talent show Das Supertalent, where her sister Yana joined her for a surprise casting the following year. In 2015, she hosted the hidden camera primetime show Prankenstein. In the same year she became a co-host with Thore Schölermann of The Voice of Germany, which was recently renewed for the 11th season. The two also presented The Voice Senior in 2018/19.

She supports several charities

Lena Gercke has been involved in various charitable causes since the beginning of her career and actively fights against diseases such as leukemia and breast cancer. She supports the non-profit German Bone Marrow Donor File (DKMS). During an appearance on the OMR podcast, she mentioned that she has worked “closely” with the organization for several years, with a particular focus on helping young women with breast cancer. She also revealed that part of the income from her “LeGer” collection also goes towards making T-shirts and sweaters for charity. In her words, she is particularly committed to the fight against cancer because “almost everyone in my family has cancer.” She also participates in charity events for the benefit of children and was a participant in the charity horse race on September 23, 2006 in Cologne, Germany.
